History: Battenberg has first been mentioned by the
"Lorscher Codex"
about 788 AD under the name "Bettenberge".
In 1689, the village had been destroyed during the War of the Spanish Succession by French troups. In the 18th century Battenberg was temporarily the residence of the Counts of Leiningen-Hardenburg. The Battenberg coat of arms show the Leiningen eagle and the Murbach running dog. Nowadays, the rural community of Battenberg is under the administration of Gruenstadt-Land, part of the Bad Duerkheim administration district. Protestant Parish Church: Founded in the beginning of the 13th century the church
was built in early Gothic style with a ribbed vault covering the square
chancel.
Roman style south side door.
The organ was built in 1730 by V.Senn from Seebach with alterations later on by J.Jelacic from Speyer in 1886. In 1987, the missing carving of the instrument was reconstructed giving the organ it´s original appearance back. The churchyard (photo above) has a beautiful view of the Palatinate winegrowing area and the Rhine river valley. On a clear day there is a good view of the Odenwald and Black Forest mountain ranges. |

![]() Worth a visit:
Battenberg castle ruins - only the ring wall and parts of a tower are left. The castle ruins are pirvately owned but are partially open to the public for it´s unique view. Approaching Battenberg by the winding access road ochreous sandstone formations can be seen underneath the castle ruins, so-called "Blitzroehren" (lightning tubes). However, they have not been formed by lightning but by local influences of ferruginous mineral concentrations. During the 19th century, ochre was mined near Battenberg used for plaster coloring. In spring, the cherry tree blossom is attracting many visitors, but Battenberg is also popular with people hiking the wine-growing area and the Palatinate Forest mountain range. Entering the village a trail map at the road side gives information on hiking distances and duration. |
